Let's just call it for what it is, The Gulf of The Dead Cat.
"The dead cat strategy is a kind of misdirection where somebody will say something so ridiculous or do something so outlandish that it takes your attention away from where they don't want you to look. ..."
Good, renaming it was not the smartest of moves to begin with. Considering it’s a gulf because of the gulf, which is down in Mexico. Our border with it is really like the outer wall of a harbor. It’s only there to guide you towards the end.
"Gulf of North America" would make more sense, because most people regard (just) "America" as synonymous with "USA". Though that name would perhaps be more appropriate for the Hudson Bay, which is farther north.
That's not true. I live in Europe(Germany) and I as well as everyone I know personally says "America" when we mean "the USA" and mean "the USA" when we say "America".
I went to a minor national park over the summer (Abraham Lincoln Birthplace National Historical Park) and there was a map of the United States showing all the national parks in the country with a "Gulf of America" sticker placed over "Gulf of Mexico".
It is really concerning that this post was flagged.
It looks interesting for me and not specially politically oriented or "partisan" but a fun fact with stats.
Maybe I'm missing something, but I have the feeling that it was flagged unfairly to mask the disturbing reality shown by numbers.
There is a sustainable censorship campaign running on HN. Everything that makes government looks bad or is contrary to government beliefs gets flagged
Hey I'm working on a product related to flagged content. Would you be willing to talk to me?
I guess why not :-)

Only people from US think in America as synonymous with USA

Slow news day? The economy is about to fall off a cliff.
Unless you’re heavy weighted in stocks.
All time highs!
When you sail into a maelstrom, the boat will also pick up steam…

I really badly want to hear that the sticker was cheap-looking, and even peeling.
> When the Associated Press announced that it would stick with Gulf of Mexico, Trump blocked AP reporters from the Oval Office
Isn’t more people concerned with how much Trump thinks its fine to poke around with the freedom of press?
That's why I'm surprised Trump didn't sign an executive order to rename the 'Canada goose' bird to 'America goose'.
Is he asleep at the wheel, or how did he miss this opportunity?
I always said Canada geese are stealing the American workers' job of last resort: sleeping in the park. He really should do something.
Or Lake Ontario to Lake New York.
Has anyone checked if Trump thinks he’s talking about favorite sport? I can understand if he wants to call it golf of America.
