Is this the outage everyone promised when he fired everybody? How all that institutional knowledge would be gone forever and the whole thing would definitely come crashing down?

Took longer than predicted.

FWIW Twitter hasn’t really “worked” since the Elon took over.

Only a tiny fraction of tweets can be viewed without signing in.

Going to someone’s profile shows tweets in a seemingly random order.

Anecdotally, I don’t go to Twitter very often now, but when I do I frequently see the “something went wrong” page.

But yeah, if you force users to sign in to view, and also push (allegedly) 80% of those users to other platforms, I guess you can keep things mostly working with a skeleton crew while you dismantle the government.

I've been trying to post my Wordle score all morning. Before it was actually down, I noticed a glitch where I got a "Sorry, something went wrong" when I tried to mark my image as sensitive (as a spoiler).

This leads me to believe that they attack is using image metadata as a vector of attack.

Attack? Is there any other indication of an attack?

There are many possible root causes which could explain what you observed.

      Well, Elon just confirmed it.

      > There was (still is) a massive cyberattack against X.

      > We get attacked every day, but this was done with a lot of resources. Either a large, coordinated group and/or a country is involved.

It's very typical for a DDoS to target some specific feature like this deep in the UI that might have been overlooked for rate limiting.
